Apple announced on 8th February that Tap to Pay will be available on iPhones. People can use their iPhones to make payments to millions of merchants in the US. With a single touch, pay from contactless credit and debit cards receivers with ease. Shops don’t need any extra hardware or payment terminals. Also, payment platforms and app developers can incorporate Tap to Pay on iPhone into their iOS apps. So, it will be a payment option for their business clients. Want to know how this contactless payment will work? In this post, we will discuss how to use Tap to Pay feature on iPhone. So, let’s begin.
What is Tap to Pay on iPhone?
Apple’s new Tap to Pay on iPhone basically lets you make your iPhone a payment terminal. We think this technology results from Apple’s purchase of startup Mobeewave. The Tap to Pay feature will support Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other digital wallets. So, businesses that wanted to make contactless payments on an iPhone no longer have to use third-party tools.
How to Make Contactless payments through Tap to Pay?
Right now, it’s only available to consumers and merchants that use an iPhone XS or newer. They can take contactless payments using compatible iOS applications. The iPhone Tap to Pay feature works like:
To pay at a store, hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near the merchant’s iPhone.
Use Apple Pay, a contactless card, or another digital wallet.
The transaction will be completed securely using NFC technology.
The special contactless payment does not need any extra hardware to take contactless payments. So, anyone can accept and process payments from wherever they conduct business.
Which Merchants Accept Tap to Pay on iPhone?
Apple has collaborated with Stripe. In spring 2022, it will be the first payment platform to provide Tap to Pay on iPhone to its business clients. They will include the Shopify Point of Sale app. Later this year, other payment systems and apps will support this feature. Customers will see this payment method at all Apple Stores in the United States shortly.
Apple Pay is now accepted at over 90% of US businesses. With this new feature, nearly any company can enable their customers to use their iPhones to pay at the checkout. Contactless credit and debit cards from prominent payment networks, including American Express, Discover, Mastercard, and Visa, will function with Tap to Pay on iPhone.
Which iPhone Models are Compatible?
This contactless payment feature isn’t currently available for usage. But they included the relevant API in iOS 15.4 beta. So, we assume Apple will enable the capability for iPhone XS and later devices. There are previous iPhones that adapted NFC, however, the iPhone 6, 7, and 8 devices are not currently supported.
Is this Payment Safe?
All of Apple’s payment services are designed and developed with privacy in mind. Apple Pay’s privacy technology safeguards customers’ payment data in this feature. All transactions will be encrypted and handled via the Secure Element. Also, Apple will do not know of the purchased product or the buyer’s information.
Apple will add the full set of payment and commerce options. So, all payment systems can help their merchant clients to manage and grow their companies.
In a forthcoming iOS software beta, taking part payment providers and their app developer partners can use Tap to Pay on iPhone in their software development kits (SDKs).
