If you have not been living under a rock for the past couple of weeks, you know that the US banned Huawei from doing business with US companies. This incident took a major shock for the tech community and Huawei is in danger from all sides. This led them not using Android or any Google services on their smartphone at all. Not only Google but also there are US companies naming few Nvidia, Microsoft, Intel to cut off ties as well. Huawei also sells its Laptop with Windows OS, Intel processor and Nvidia graphics but now they can not make any further.
Now, Huawei is developing its own OS for Android and Windows replacement which will be named Hongmeng OS. Huawei had started developing its own system since 2012. This news was reported long back but it was not important at that time as now it is. The company may have predicted long before if they had to replace Android and Windows, a new in-house OS would help.
Huawei Hongmeng OS
Huawei has registered a trademark for its homegrown operating system (OS) named “Hongmeng”. It is trademarked in China at the Trademark Office of China’s National Intellectual Property Administration on August 24, 2018. The valid term of the trademark is from May 14, 2019, to May 13, 2029. Earlier this week, Richard Yu Chengdong the head of the company’s consumer business reveals Hongmeng OS is likely to be launch as early as this fall of the year no later than spring next year.
The new OS will be used as a universal operating system for multiple platforms including smartphone, computer, tablet, TV, cars and smart wearable devices. It will also be compatible with all Android apps and Web apps. “It’s not a difficult task to come up with a new OS, but it’s difficult to build up an ecosystem for that” -Huawei founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei.
A few days ago, the company has trademarked three names in Europe with EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office). This includes trademark names HUAWEI ARK OS, HUAWEI ARK, ARK, and ARK OS. Seeing that Huawei has already trademarked Hongmeng OS before, this new Ark OS name could be known globally.
The trademark application has the same categories as the previous trademark information:
Compiler software, operating systems for electronic devices.
Design and development of compiler software and operating systems for electronic devices, design and development of mobile phone applications. Featuring compiler software, Software as a Service (Saas) featuring compiler software.
Can Huawei’s new OS replace Android?
Huawei is the second largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. The company was aiming to surpass Samsung this year, but this latest controversy will probably affect those plans. Currently Android and iOS are the most preferred OS to use. There is no room for any other OS, we have seen Microsoft failing with their Windows phone. Samsung also failed with its Tizen OS. If not Android, Huawei has to find some replacement and it has to be using its own OS.
We hope Huawei Ban is lifted with some mutual settlements with the US government. It would be a real hit for the tech community to see Huawei fall down the ladder. It would have a considerable impact on competition and basically leave the vast majority of the market for Samsung and Apple to control.
