Design: The Phone is Heavy but that Matte Finish!
Design
Instead of the glossy shining back panel, this time around on the X50 Pro, Realme has gone with a matte finish. The phone comes in two different colours, Moss Green and Rust Red which are undersaturated and to be honest they look outstanding, something unique. It also makes the phone less slippery and provides a grip which also improves the in-hand feel. It captures fewer fingerprints because of the matte finish. The front, as well as back, are protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5, and the side frame is made out of metal which makes the phone premium in all the aspects. The phone is thick with 8.9mm thickness and slightly heavier with the weight of 205 grams. The weight distribution is proper. The quad-camera setup is vertically aligned on the top left side, same as the Realme XT.
The power button and volume rockers are present on the right and left side respectively, while the SIM Card tray is present at the bottom along with the speaker grille and USB Type-C port. You can only insert two nano SIMs; there is no space for memory expansion. The earpiece double-ups as the secondary speaker and secondary noise cancellation mic are present at the top. Are we missing something? Oh yes, sadly there is no 3.5mm audio jack on the X50 Pro, something you should take note of.
Display: The Smooth OLED Panel
The display on the X50 Pro is top-notch, without a notch and with a pill-shaped display cutout! No pun intended! The screen size is 6.44″ with a resolution of FHD+. The refresh rate is 90Hz, and everything feels super snappy and fluid, no stutter in the UI. The Super AMOLED panel by Samsung produces vibrant colours which are pleasing to the eyes and deep black. The in-display fingerprint scanner is retained, and it’s speedy and accurate. The display is HDR10+, and Widevine L1 certified so that you can consume any high definition content on the phone. The punch-hole does not affect media consumption, and you will get used to it. Dolby Atmos power the dual stereo speaker and also supports Hi-res Audio playback.
Performance: The Realme Upgrade
Realme X50 Pro offers the best specs you can ask for. The phone is powered by the latest and the greatest Snapdragon 865 SoC with up to 12 gigs of LPDDR5 RAM and the storage used here is UFS 3.0. Alongside this, it comes with WiFi 6.0, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC and Dual-band GPS. That’s enough for the specs, now let’s talk about real-world performance. The performance of the X50 Pro is reliable so far. It handles all the tasks we throw at it. We played games like PUBG Mobile at high graphics settings, and there were no frame drops. Realme UI feels snappier than ever, and the RAM management is quite impressive. Also, there is a Vapor Cooling system for thermal management.
Realme UI 1.0
The phone runs on Realme UI 1.0 on top of Android 10 out of the box. We enjoyed our time with Realme UI. It feels clean, feature pack, and most importantly, we did not face ads till the moment, and we appreciate it. After all its a flagship smartphone and no one wants bloatware and ads. Snapdragon 865, Realme UI and the 90Hz panel makes everything superfluid.
5G in India?
Realme X50 Pro is technically the first 5G smartphone in India, and well we don’t have the 5G networks in India. So, should you buy a 5G phone? If you are someone who travels a lot, then you will get the 5G network in other countries, which is a good thing. There is no information available on the 5G in India yet, but it’s good to be future proof. It supports most of the 5G bands, so whenever the 5G network rolled out in India, you will be able to use it right away. The Snapdragon X55 5G modem supports all major frequency bands like mmWave, sub-6, TDD, FDD, SA and NSA modes. Realme X50 Pro has a set of 13 antennae, 8 for 4G/5G, 3 for GPS and WiFi, 1 for Bluetooth 5.1 and 1 for NFC. Also, the phone features WiFi 6 and quite fast data speed than other 4G phones, so it does work and provides you with a fast internet speed from current phones available in the market.
Camera: Ultrawide Angle, Selfies!
Kudos to Realme for providing an ultrawide angle lens on the front. The pill-shaped display cutout packs a 32MP IMX616 primary shooter coupled with an 8MP ultrawide angle lens with 105-degree FoV. The selfies turn out good. The ultrawide angle lens losses out on details and some colour shift are present, but it’s enjoyable to capture ultrawide selfies. Then there is a quad-camera setup on the back, which is almost same as the Realme X2 Pro, well, it’s a good thing and bad as well. Good because we have seen Realme X2 Pro performed well in almost all lighting conditions and the telephoto and ultrawide lens capture some great images. However, we were expecting Sony’s new IMX686 64MP sensor, which we are going to see on a lot of flagship smartphone this year. Also, there is no 4K 60fps recording option despite having Snapdragon 865 SoC. There’s no OIS, and the EIS does not record very stable footage at 4K resolution; however, Super Steady feature kicks in at 1080p and the footage turns out good and stable as well.
There are tons of modes available in the stock camera app. You get a dedicated Ultra Macro mode, Slow Motion video recording up to 960fps, Time-Lapse, Pro Mode, Panorama, Portrait video and 4k @30fps video recording support.
Realme X50 Pro Camera Samples
As you can see in the following images, the 64MP Samsung Isocell GW1 sensor capture crisp and well-exposed images in daylight condition. The colours are excellent, and not oversaturated, which is a nice thing. Even in low light, the phone does not disappoint, and the dedicated night mode helps to capture bright images. Ultrawide angle lens also works as a macro lens, and the photos are nice. The third Telephoto lens can capture 2x optical, 5x hybrid and up to 20x digital zoomed images. While 2x and 5x images are perfect, the 20x zoomed images are ok-ish. The depth sensor also does a reasonably good job in portrait shots. The cameras of Realme X50 Pro are pretty good for the asking price, but the thing is that we were expecting a little extra from the flagship device.
The 32MP front camera does an excellent job in the selfie department. But what’s more exciting here is the 8MP wide-angle lens. Although the quality of the ultrawide lens is not as good as the primary lens, we enjoyed clicking wide selfies.
The first photo is captured with an ultrawide angle lens followed by primary and 2x telephoto. The last image is captured using a dedicated Ulta Macro mode. The colours are beautiful and vibrant, and the exposure is well maintained here. You get shallower depth of field which creates natural bokeh which looks good.
In broad daylighting condition, the cameras of Realme X50 Pro shines. It maintains the shadows as well as highlights nicely. The dynamic range seems pretty good too. The Ultrawide angle lens also captures a good amount of details.
Battery: Crazy 65W Fast Charger
Realme X50 Pro packs a decent 4,200mAh battery which will last for a day with a single charge. Keep in mind that the phone comes with 90Hz refresh rate display which consumes more power, but the battery optimisation in Realme UI is very good. Just in case you run out of battery, nothing to worry about because the in-box 65W SuperDart charger is insanely fast! It charges the device from 10 to 100% in nearly 35 minutes, yes crazy 35 minutes! You can see the increasing battery percentage when you plug-in the charger! Realme has set a new standard here for the flagship smartphones of 2020.
Conclusion: A Solid Offering from Realme
Let’s now conclude all the things. The main highlight of the phone is the 5G support; however, in India, there is no use of a 5G smartphone as of now. Keep the 5G aside for a moment. It’s a budget flagship smartphone. It offers top of the line specs including the Snapdragon 865 along with the LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.0 Storage, 90HZ OLED Panel, Quad camera setup and ultrawide angle selfie camera, stereo speaker and 65W crazy fast charger. At a starting price of rupees 38k for the (6+128GB) variant, it’s a pretty sweet deal. However, the rear camera is not flagship-grade, there is no IP rating and wireless charging support, and it lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack plus the phone is a bit thick and heavy as well which you should keep in mind. If you are looking for a budget flagship smartphone, then Realme X50 Pro is one of the best smartphones you can buy right now. More smartphones are also coming soon, so you can wait for them in case you are not in a hurry.
